Drawing influence from techno, house, post punk, design, and literary texts, Heavy Slave itself originates from Anne Carson’s The Albertine Workout in which she asks “what makes a slave heavy…does she come from a heavy nation or adhere to a heavy philosophy of life?”. Consisting of seven exploratory tracks, the tape resists settling into one concise genre.
Polyrhythmic beats, swelling synth lines, occasional sparse, self-aware vocal accents, Heavy Slave is an investigation of time through the gestures of sound and its materiality.

Technofeminist Emma Olsen sells her second UMFANG album short when she describes it as a set of DJ tools. Sure, "OK" is essentially a no frills affair, but there's plenty of form to go with the functionality, not to mention a highly idiosyncratic approach to song construction where the individual components of a track drop in and out of the mix seemingly at random. Techno that's experimental by design. 1080p strikes again. Nic Brown
